My mom used to tell me not to leave crums around the house or ants would come. i didn't under stand that the ants acem from outside and would eat the crums, i thought the crums turned into ants so i sat there watching a crum for hours waiting for it to turn into an ant.
When my mom was a teenager, she lived in California, and had never seen a firefly. So, she always thought they were mythical creatures like fairies and unicorns. What a surprise she had when she moved to the northeast!
I always thought wood lice were called cheesybugs as that is what my Mother had told me. I was later totally embarrassed when I was informed that they were in fact wood louse.
When i was little i thought that there was a small, slimy snail inside my ear that let me hear, and that if i touched it with my finger it would crawl into my brain to get away and i would be deaf for the rest of my life
I used to believe that slugs were deadly and they would bite you and kill you. 0_o Where did I get that idea?
I used to believe that the reason you never saw moths during the day was because they were all flying towards the sun. Then, when they couldn't make it all the way there and it got dark, they would see the lights of the houses and fly back down.
I used to believe that moths were a species of bats that only ate the tag on the inside of your shirt
I thought that spiderwebs and cobwebs were two different things: apiderwebs were made by spiders, but cobwebs just magically appeared!
as a child of a 'neat freak' my mother used to stress about crumbs on the counter because 'tomorrow we'll have ants'. i wish she had been more specific, for the longest time i thought crumbs turned into ants.
i used to think when i fell asleep spiders would capture me and eat me.
When I was younger, I was deathly afraid of spiders in general due to a story my brother told me, saying that "If you squish one of the little spiders, a big one will come along while you sleep, crawl in your mouth and spin a web in your throat so you choke to death". I freaked out whenever I saw a little spider cause I was afraid I might accidentally kill it.
I used to believe that lizards were little dinosaurs ready to enlarge of they touched the water
I saw a spider on the floor and thought it was a baby tarantula. We don't even get tarantulas where I live.
As a child, I was told that if I were to kill a group of ants, it would start to rain. Still to this day I watch where I step if I don't want it to rain.
when i was really small, we lived in a place where the mosquitoes were HUGE. there was a dead one trapped between my window and the window sill...always in the same spot (but at this time i suppose it hadnt occurred to me that life ends) anyways, my parents used that mosquito to put fear into my sister and i. it became the "eezil floss" and if we were bad girls, it would come into our beds at night and grow to humongous proportions and swallow us whole. ha ha.
I had a horrible time sleeping every night because I routinely thought there were giant scorpions in our house who came out at night and were bent on eating me as soon as I fell asleep.I felt absolutely sure that these were the mommies and daddies of the actual tiny scorpions in the house. I held the belief until we moved out.
I used to believe that a dragon fly with that long tail would use it to sew your eyes shut. All of my friends and I would always cover our eyes when we saw a dragon fly in the vicinity. Now I know better. It is probably your ears they would sew shut.
I used to think that fireflies and 'lightning bugs' were two different insects, and that 'lightning bugs' were responsible for causing lightning strikes.
My Brother used to tell me that if i kept my mouth opened when I was slepping, little spiders would crawl in my mouth and lay eggs and then one night they would crawl out of my nose! Hundreds of them! ( talk about a nice brother! )
One day my older sister told me how "Earwigs" got their name: They like to crawl into your ears to bite the auricles and then build their nest into your brain to feed their offsprings from your ears. I'm 26 now and know better but I am still very afraid of Earwigs :( Damn you, sister!
