I always thought that cows were the opposite of horses, cats were the opposite of dogs, frogs the opposite of lizards, lions the opposite of tigers. This worked very well for me in helping me put my perception of the animal world in order, but when I came acroos animals that I couldn't pigeon hole in this way it filled me with a real feeling of unease...
i used to belive if you picked a guinea pig up by it's tail it's eyes would pop out
I once got rabbits as a present for easter. they were in a cardboard box. We didn't have a proper cage for them so my parents put then in the playpen until we could get a cage. The rabbits chewed through the play and hopped all over the house pooping and whatnot. I guess this was a huge pain to my parents who decided to skip the cage and bring back the rabbits back to the store. However, they told me that the rabbits were going to live in the wood s behind our house so that if they were needed at Easter they would be easier to find. I beleived this FOR YEARS!
I used to believe in 'land sharks.' They were sharks that would sort of swim through dirt. I thought that if I were outside standing on the ground alone they would get me. So, I hardly played outside in fear of those things. And I had nightmares about them a lot.
I live near a big hill and my mum told me that the sheep who lived on the hill had to walk down the hill backwards becuse it was so steep. Everytime I went past the hill I used to look for sheep walking backwards down the hill, but never saw any!!
Whenever we would pass by a farm with cows, my father would tell me that the cows were called rabbits. I was convinced of this until first grade.
I live in the country, where we have grey and brown squirrles. When I went to my cousin's house in the city there were only black squirrles. Naturally, I felt sorry for them because they were so dirty from pollution. I always wanted to somehow give them a bath.
When I was little my best friend told me I could grow a horse if I planted horse hair in the backyard. So, every week after our riding lesson, I would collect a clump of mane and tail hair and proceed to scatter it around the lawn. I never had a pony as a child. I was so gullible.
i grew up on a farm, and often we would round up the cows and take them to a different pasture. i was told that if i am walking behind a cow and it goes number 2, that if it got on me they turned to freckles. needless to say i have freckles but i was never splattered on thank goodness
My grandma used to say that there were snakes that could come up from the ground at night that were huge and the color of dirt in order to keep me from going out side at night
I got a book from the library on spiders, and read about the black widow. It said that it's webs could be found behind couches and chairs. If any of my toys fell behind the couch, I wouldn't get them for fear of the black widow. My mom retrieved a whole pile of them one day. Little did I know that black widows did not live in the part of country were I am.
I grew up near Southport, Australia, so naturally I would go to the ocean quite a bit. I used to think if I got sunburnt then any sharks swimming in the water would think I was a crab and jump onto the shore to eat me. The longer I stayed in the sun and the redder I got, the more chance I had of being eaten. Needless to say, I didn't go swimming a lot.

I used to believe that penguins could fly, they just didn't want to.
When I was little someone gave me a "guinea" pig as a pet. She told me that, if I held it upside down...it's eyes would pop out. I never touched the guinea pig! (I never cared for any rodent-type animal!)

I was raised Polish Roman Catholic.
When I was a child, my father used to tell me that on Christmas eve when we were at mass that at exactly midnight animals began to talk.
This had to do with some blessing of the Baby Jesus to the animals in the manger.
For years I harboured anger at my father every Christmas Eve because I was dragged to mass and I really wanted to talk to my dog.

A friend believed that they used a tame shark during the filming of "Jaws".
I used to beleive that all black cows were bulls, so would be terrified of crossing a field that had a black cow in it. I beleived this till i was about 13 then one day actually listened to what i said, could not believe that my dad and big bro had conned me all that time.

I had a friend at school whose Dad had told her that tortoises had wings and that they were related to Ladybugs. We found this in a conversation about pets when we were 18 - cos you don't often talk about tortoises in everyday conversation she had never had anyone dispel the myth!
I used to believe that the little styrofoam beads in bean bags were actually dormant snake eggs that would only come out if you pinched them with your fingernails....
We lived across the street from a wooded area. My sister used to tell me that prickly type bushes are what snakes grow from. It also made me very nervous. One day while we were out there and it started to rain, she added the fact they grow MUCH faster in the rain. I ran screaming all the way home.
