When I was young (7 yeards) i believed that dead people were buried in the walls of my house. My house was only a few years old but it used to freak me out nonetheless.

Somehow I got it in my head that unborn babies lived in the walls of houses while they were waiting to be born. Sometimes I liked the idea and felt comforted by the babies. And other times I felt kinda freaked out by it.

When I was about 6 or so my neighbor told me that his grandma had a can of invisible paint at her house. I never found out if he had misunderstood something the grown-ups had said, or if he was BS'ing me. But, for a long time afterward, I sure did want to get my hands on that can of paint...

I used to believe that if I could swing high enough on my swingset then I could swing up over the top of it and keep going around it in a loop. I tried, but could never do it. :)

My father used to really mess with me and tell me that when I was done washing a pot, he wanted to see his face in it. I could never tell when he was pulling my leg, and one night spent over two hours trying to accomplish that impossible task. My mother finally decided she wanted to join in on the fun and told me that I need to put some elbow grease on it. I then proceeded to ask her if we actually had any that I could use on the pot. I really thought that there was a substance called elbow grease.

Though she denies it today, my mother told my siblings and me that if we walked across a freshly waxed floor we would stick there forever. To this day, I still cringe slightly when I set my foot down for the first step.

I thought everything had feelings, furniture, bugs, pens, you name it. Getting ice was the worst. When I took ice out of the ice tray, I would try and leave a few cubes near each other so they wouldn't get lonely. Later I started thinking what if the ice cubes I left near each other didm't get along, so I had to debate each time whether it was better to risk an ice cube being lonely or it having to put up with unfriendly cubes.

When I was a little girl about 4 yrs old, I had (as most children do) the occasional accident in bed at night. The next morning, my mom would have to strip the covers and clean the vinyl mattress coverings with a water/vinegar solution. I thought I was such a lucky little girl because I had a 'water' bed. I told everyone until one day I heard my mom explaining the truth to my grandmother.

I used to believe the sump pump at my friend Pete's house would cut off your hand or foot or what ever else you put in there (at least that's what his dad told us).

I used to believe that all old houses had secret rooms. So, when we moved into an old house I was overjoyed and spent days searching for that secret room. I mean, the house was small and there was obviously no room for a secret room, but I just knew there had to be one. I still live in that house, I never found a secret room, but I still really wish there was one.

I thought our old furnace (which bumped, clicked, whistled and groaned even when off) was going to come get me some night. I used to keep a glass of water by my bed to throw on it and put out the fire in it if ever I awoke to find it in my room....

When my family and I moved into a new house, I picked my bedroom for one reason and one reason alone. I was in love with this white canopy bed and , at the time, believed that if you moved into or out of a house, all of the belongings that were there had to stay in the same place forever. Unfortunetely, for me, I was horribly mistaken. Hey, give me a break! I was only three years old!

My cousin's got me to believe anything. They told me that under the carpet live everyone in the world. Sort of like a twin. Even cartoon characters. One day I put my ear up to the ground and I still swear to this day I heard Kermet the frogs voice.

What time when I was young, I was cleaning something, and my dad told me to "put a little elbow grease in it". Well, we had a can of some hand cleaner in a can on our washing machine, and on the can was a picture of a guy using his elbow to pump it into his hand...needless to say, I thought that is what he meant for elbow grease. I have never lived that one down!

When I was little I used to be terrified of fiberglass insulation. I used to think that if I got too close to it, it would reach out from the walls and suck me in and eat me alive.

when me and my brother was little we thought that we were in the army. so we tied some sheets together and jumped out of the 2 story house. then we wouuld get on top of the rotten well house and play look out.(this would be about 2am). the next morning my mom would come and retrive us from the well house. we were about froze, and couldn't remember going out there. i guess we were sleep walking. 20 years later we still don't believe the story when mom tells us.

I was told as a child that the window key used to open all the windows in my house was infact a gun, hence giving me deep psycological problems reguarding guns. Whatsmore one of these keys hung one the wall above my bed....oh the nightmares!

My grandmother has a large chest of drawers for silver. It's made of heavy, ornately carved wood. The first time my dad saw it he called it a monstrosity because it was so ugly. Everyone in my family called that chest "the monstrosity", as in "Lauren, would you go get some napkins out of the monstrosity." All throughout my childhood I believed that large chests of drawers were called Monstrosities. I even argued with my teacher about it in third grade because she tried to tell me a monstrosity was something bad. I thought, "What's so bad about a chest of drawers?"

My mom used to aways say if I lost something it would "turn up sometime". I never seached for anything I couldn't find because I figured when it was ready to be found it would turn up out of the carpet in our living room.

As a child, I'd heard of the idea of "wall to wall carpets", and was quite convinced that some houses had carpets going down one wall, along the floor, and up the next wall. When I was in college, one of the lecture halls had exactly this and I realised that part of my brain still had this misconception. Luckily, I managed not to make a fool out of myself on my first day.
