When i was a young boy i sucked my thumb, my mom told me that she would put pepper on my thumb if i didn't stop. I didn't listen because she didn't do it. Then she told me I would have buck teeth, i stared in the mirror and i swore that i was getting buck teeth so i stopped.

In old west lore, Billy the Kid was called 'buck toothed'. I thought this was because he sucked his thumb.

In the early 60's, when I was a toddler, my mom tried in vain to get me to stop sucking my thumb. Eventually she must of gotten pretty desperate because she told me that if I kept it up, that I would turn black! Well I truly believe in "what goes around comes around" because some time after kicking the habit at about age 3, this came back around to my unsuspecting mom....I'm told that while standing in line at a store, I stood staring at another child about my age, who happened to be black, and said to my mom's horror: "ah ha! you've been sucking your thumb!" Thankfully, this fear tactic my mom thought to be innocent taught my mom a tough lesson, so from then on, all jokes aside, I was taught to honor the truth about all of the different cultures in our world!

when i was about 8 , my neighbor died. My mum told me that she was going too wash his body and then sprinkle some water on my hand so I oculd stop. Later she returned with a yellowish liqiud and quicly dipped my finger in. From that day on I never sucked my tumb ever agin. Now I know that it was a mix of water and yellow cake coloring.

I am the youngest of nine, and my older brothers got a great thrill out of telling me that the police were coming to arrest me for sucking my thumb. Any time we heard sirens they would reinforce this notion. I would run and hide in the closet for hours, but I didn't stop sucking my thumb. To this day I still get a little nervous when I hear sirens.

My uncle had lost his thumb in world war 2. We told my brother (a thumb-sucker until 13) that my uncle had sucked his thumb so much it just dropped off one day.

when i was very young i used to suck my thumb all the time. i was out with my mother at work when she noticed my thumb was a bit red and swollen from my constant sucking at it. She then told me if i continued to suck my thumb it would keep growing and growing until one day it would explode. i stopped sucking my thumb at that very moment.

My dad told me, when I was about 3 or 4, that if I sucked my thumb, a garden gnome would come in the night and cut it off. I was terrified of garden gnomes, positive that they came alive after dark. needless to say, i stopped sucking my thumb!

My cousin had a thumb-sucking complex which her parents found necessary to remove. The "blackened thumb" scared her, but not enough for her to stop. So at one point her father caught her in the act, grabbed her thumb and showed it to her that it was black. Scared straight. He had coated the palms of his hands in black oily substance, and when he grabbed her thumb he rubbed it on her...very clever and amusing.

My gran once told me that if I didn't stop sucking my fingers, they would get smaller and smaller like a lollipop.

Being inquisitive, I just sucked them more to see if she was right.
