My mother told all 5 of us kids that if we swung on the doors we would get the chicken pox. Sure enough, all five of us got the disease.

When a classmate repeated that old addage "step on a crack, break your mother's back" I believed it and since my Mom had a lot of illness for years as a I child I was terrified of stepping on a crack.

When I was little, I used to believe that there was a 'mixer' in your tummy. If you were sick, the 'mixer' was going round the wrong way!

I used to believe that if a person needed a blood transfusion, that all of his or her blood was removed and then replaced with the new donated blood.

When I was a young girl, around 3 or 4, I told my mother I had a stomach ache, and my mother told me because I had a monster in my stomach, so I would always imagine a little tiny monster inside my tummy when I had a belly ache. I'll never forget that. =)

When I was about 5 I had to have my appendix removed. The day it happened I was really sick with what I thought was a stomach ache for most of the day. Now normally, at breakfast, my mom would make me chocolate milk. But for some reason that day my dad had made it and he'd put too much syrup in it. For years I thought it was his fault that I had gotten so sick!

I was born under cancer and as a child I was sure that everyone born under that sign would die of the disease! I never asked my parents or anyone else for that matter because I thought it was understood and nobody liked to talk about it. In time I learn on my own that this was not the case but in the meantime I suffered a lot because of this belief.

I never cried when I got a shot at the doctors office as a child because I used to believe that the alcohol they would swab on your arm was a pain killer. Because of mind over matter I felt very little pain.

When I was little my cousin told me that if I didn't lick my blood after I got cut, I woudl eventually run out of blood and die, so I did...for at least 3 years before my mom told me the truth.

When my 8 year old brother saw my allergy vaccine (yes, the vial with the vaccine inside it), he thought it was 7-UP. How in the world did he think that such a little vial with a doctor's label could contain 7-UP, which was rarely bought at home, is beyond my grasp. He almost drank it, but he could not get the lid off. And then my mother told him what it was.

I used to believe that bacteria had legs and arms and would move into your body, and then you would get sick. I also used to think that bacteria was yellow.

When my son's preschool teacher called and told me I'd have to come and get him because he had diarrhea, he thought that meant he was going to die!
Poor kid.

My mom had me believing that if it was cold outside and I went out with wet hair that I would get a strep throat. The same went for going to bed with damp hair. Even though I know this isn't what causes strep throat, to this day I still stop and think maybe I should get out the blow dryer....just in case!!

I knew that people who had cancer frequently lost their hair, but I didn't know it was a symptom of the treatment. I thought it was a symptom of cancer itself. Cue heart attack when I noticed my long hair falling out more than normal in the shower!
