I used to beleive that you shouldn't drink too much water before going to bed because if you did, the water level in your body would be too high and would get passed your neck and that would short circuit your brain.
I used to beleive that you could catch yourself sleeping if you woke up fast enough.
When I was younger I believed that if someone touched me while I was sleeping they would be able to see what I was dreaming.
I used to think that when people go to sleep, their body fires all their 'workers' and only had one person - the ermergency worker. And there would be a sign 'help wanted'. When you woke up you would have all the workers back. I had an active imagination.
I used to believe nobody moved or breathed when they slept... so when I pretended to be asleep I would hold my breath and 'talk in my dreams' to cover up my breathing!
I used to believe that it was impossible to distinguish dreams from reality. I remember being with my dad an thinking to myself,
'i could just be dreaming all of this and its not really happening'
I was an odd child:)
When I was little for a short time I used to have a theory that my life was nothing but the dream of a little girl who had a life of her own. When I was awake she was asleep and vice versa
When I was younger and wouldnt go to sleep, my mam used to tell me that the 'Sandman' would come and rub sand in my eyes to make me go to sleep. I imagined him wearing a tweed jacket and matching flat cap, with a big brown sack & weird skin...
When my sister was little she spent ages getting ready for bed every night. she'd put on make up and perfume. when I asked why she said "I want to look my best in case any of the boys in my class dream about me"!
I used to believe that if you got up in the middle of the night the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) would get you. So i was always scared and one night my mum woke me up because we were going abroad and we got to the other country half asleep and i screamed the hotel down because i thought the bfg had got me!
I used to believe that rubbing your fore head, left to right, 3 times with your right hand, kissing your head, then rubbing once more would rub away the bad dreams.
My mother used to convince us that she could see doves in our eyes when we were tired. The more number of doves, the more tired we were. 3 or 4 doves was the max & used to promptly make us tuck into bed....
After watching a Twilight Zone episode, I believed if I slept too close to the wall, I would fall through to another dimension.
when i was 5 i was obsessed with the 'sleep' in my eyes. i used to think that while i slept, little mice took tiny pieces of cheese and put them in my eyes before i woke up in the morning.
...mice do love cheese
I used to believe that if I didn't sleep on my back, then wicked elves would climb onto my bottom. I remember lying there imagining them with ladders and catapults climbing onto me. When I was about 9, I was convinced I was a vampire and I made a cardboard coffin and slept in it.
When I was 5 or so, my dad used to tell me that if I wasn't asleep by midnight, I would turn into a pumpkin. I was so scared because I didn't know he was joking.
my brother told me when I was little, that sleeping on the side would make all your body's organs drop to that side and you would be all heavy on one side first then probably die.
for quite some time I forced myself to sleep on my back, and shreeked out of bed, when I woke on the side.. untill i found my mother asleep one morning on her side and woke her up in panic to save her live! my brother did get a little telling of. today, i still cannot fall asleep lying on the back.
I used to think that the reason that you had bad breath in the morrning was because at night there were little bugs, like fleas, that would play in your mouth. And when you started to wake up the fleas would hop out really quick, but when you started to close your mouth one farted cause he got scared.
And thats why your breath smelled. So i would try to sleep with my mouth closed but they always seemed to get in.
i think around age 5 or so, i remember one night i was awake in my bed and saw a skeleton standing there, at the foot of my bed. i imediatly thought he would steal my feet. this obviously is a dream. though i feel very odd when i think about it. now im 13 and for some odd reason i need to wear socks to bed or i cant sleep.... hmm?
I thought the couch in my grandmother was magical because whenever I would visit there and lay on the couch I slept instantly and then I started sleeping on the couch of my other relatives and my home also then started thinking all sofas had that same magic.
