I thought swallowing gum was bad because if you swallowed too much it would go to your mouth gums and eventually you would have too much gum in your mouth and you wouldn't be able to talk or eat. Part of me still thinks it's true..

I was told that if you fell asleep with gum in your mouth you'd wake up with gum in your hair. That much makes sense. But I thought it was because the gum would absorb through your head and come out through your scalp into your hair.

I am 20 years old and I just learned this morning that if you swallow gum, it doesn't really stay in your stomach for seven years.

My mum used to tell me that bubble gum was made from horse's hooves. That was supposed to stop me from chewing it, I guess! I still remember that to this day, I am 55!

When I was 7 I believed that swallowed gum would stay in my stomach forever. I also believed that the fingernail bits I chewed off and swallowed stayed in my stomach forever. I sometimes lay in bed with a feeling of dread, imagining a huge, mutant ball of mingled gum and fingernails getting bigger and bigger until it would burst out of my stomach! (Good thing Alien was still decades in the future!)

I saw my cousin chewing gum one day when i was 3 or 4 and i asked him what it was and he said gum. I asked where he got it from and he pointed to his mouth. I thought gum was your actual gums but it never came out for me to chew. His was green anyways.... not really the same thing, huh?

When i was about 4 my mom always told me not to sleep with gum in my mouth, and if i did it would get in my hair. Well i had always thought that your body would automatically make the gum go to your head and get stuck in your hair! I thoought this until i was 10.

When I believed that if you swallowed too much gum, then a gum tree will form in your stomach. Once it gets too many leaves, you explode.

I was certain until a few years ago that accidentally swallowed gum would stay in your gut for precisely 7 years (to the second) and stick to other food so it would get really big and gross. Then, on the 7-year mark, you would poo out a seemingly endless string of stretchy, accumulated food. Nasty.

When I was about 5 (in the mid 70s) there was a Juicyfruit gum commercial in which people danced around and picked packs of gum off of a giant Juicyfruit tree. I dug a hole in our backyard, buried a pack of Juicyfruit in it, and faithfully watered it for weeks before my mom finally set me straight.
