My great Aunt used to tell me and my little brother that the withches at the end of the garden would use our empty eggshells (after having boiled egg and soldiers) to mix spells in. To this day I still make a hole in the shell when I finish my egg!

My mom told me that hamburgers came from cows, but I wasn't so sure. I wanted to know how the big round patties got out of those skinny little utters.

On April 1st, many years ago, I watched a black and white program with my sister in which Italian woman were shown picking long strands of spaghetti form "spaghetti" trees. We tried in vain to convince our parents that this was a fact, after all we'd seen it on TV.

I used to think that french fries were made out of bread (not potatoes)... the sad thing is, I didn't figure it out until last year, at age 16.

As a boy, I had a toy farm with various plastic animals. I knew where milk came from and when I noticed the nipples on the toy pig I assumed that was how bacon was extracted from pigs - as a sort of liquid that was laid out to dry and solidify.

When I was about 6 I thought crumpets grew on trees because my Aunty used to bring a pack with her when she visited us. One day she didn't and I asked why not. She replied "they're out of season" so naturally I thought they grew on trees!

We would go on picnics and there would be 4 chicken legs in the basket. Dad had me convinced all chickens had 4 legs. After all, how did Mother get 4 to fry ?

My dad's explanation of where and how macaroni and spagetti were grown and harvested...picked from bushes and cut such as grass (respectively) in south Texas, dried and packaged for grocers...'til the Discovery Channel launched.

I remember thinking that to make your toast darker, you had to put in jam sandwich. Through experimentation i can tell you it's not true.

When I was about 6 years old my family went out to eat at some seafood restaurant. My dad ordered scallops and he told me that they were shark fin. So I always believed him until I was about 12 and in school we were doing a project about sea life and I then learned that scallops are a shellfish. HA! Rescently when we went out to eat, he got scallops again, and my little brother tried one and was like "Waiter, can I have some shark fin?" it was the funniest because he really thought scallops were from shark!

I used to believe that grilled cheese sandwiches were really called "girl" cheese sandwiches. I believed this because that's what it sounded like people were saying and my sister, mom and I were the only people I knew who ate them and we are all girls. My father never ate them, I thought it was because he was a boy, but it turned out he just didn't like cheese. Even when my brother got old enough to eat them he didn't like them, so I never said it properly until it was spelled out in something I was reading when I was about 16. I wonder how many people thought I had a speech impediment every time I ever asked for a "girl" cheese sandwich.
