i used to think that the little beating inside your head was a dinosaur that was on the other side of the world and every time it would beat the dinosaur would come one step closer

When I was 3 or 4, my mother told me about Santa Claus and how he came down the chimney. But I always imagined a monster, known only as "Fireplace Man" coming down the chimney. He had the ability to be invisible, shape shift, and walk on ceilings. He looked like a gray troll and had a ragged brown shirt. I had a number of nightmares about him. Thankfully, though, in one of the nightmares, my sister helped me push a boulder onto his head. I don't believe this anymore (duh) but I still have the occasional nightmare about him...

there were these tiny little armys of guys who lined up in single file and marched from the "evil side" of my bed around past me then turned and went back again. Sometimes if i was awake when they came by they would kill me, sometimes if i was asleep when they came by they would kill me. I used to be up all night incase they went by on one of the kill me if im asleep ones. When it was the kill me if im awake ones i would just desperatly pretend to be asleep for a minuite until they were gone.

When I was about five or six my friend's older sister told me there was an evil spirit of a girl who had gotten hit by a car that lived on her car's roof. Only the girls spirit was SO evil that she eventually turned into a monster that ate people's heads when they got out of the car she was on.
--at this point she hit the top of the car when I wasn't looking and then told me the girl had just hopped on her car.

It took her mom and mine thirty minutes to get me out of the back of the van because I was so hysterical and simply would not get my head cut off.

My best friend's mom was once dating a man that made up the weirdest creatures. He told us that there was a creature called the "Dopwop" that would come out of your attic and eat you if you hit your mom, the "Quaker" that lived behind the stove, the "Men in Blue" that would steal your bed if you didn't sleep on it, and so on. We believed a few of these stories, so here are the most notable ones:

He told us about a monster that hid in the mud and would jump out at you, suck you under and then devour you. My friend then found a dead pill bug and put it in a cup. I though that this was the creature that was always hiding in the mud...

He also told me that there were these "Raindrop Buddies" that you could get by going under a window during a rain shower. Apparently they stayed with the girls longer than the boys because the boys would piss on them... I was disappointed when it didn't work.

Now I just think the guy was awesome.

When I was 6 I started watching Tales from the Crypt, and chuckie; I started to get scared and from then on I slept with my head facing the wall and stuffed animals covering my head (and I mean a mountain of stuffies), w/ the night light on! Cuz if I didnt I swore Tales from the Crypt would come from under my bed and bite my nose off to look like his. And Chuckie would help take me down at the knees if I tried to run!! :O

When I was little I used to believe that there was a sand man. And he was a big shadow on the walls and could turn into sand and crawl through the crack under my door. I would always close my eyes tight at night in fear that he would come and get me.

When my brother Mikey was about four years old, there was a tear in the curtains in his bedroom. The headlights from cars passing the house would shine through this irregular shape, onto the wall, and they would move across the room as the car moved past the house.
For a few weeks, Mikey would complain every night about the "Toothy Monsters" in his room, afraid that they would eat him. Finally our Mom saw the jagged light move across the wall and showed him what it was, and he wasn't so afraid anymore.

When I was a kid I believed that there were the monster things and if you go out at night and go into the forest (or the woods) and said anything then that monster would jump right in front of you and then would take you away up the trees. So one night I had a dream of it happening and I woke up scared and ran into my parents room and they told me to go to bed. But then I kept on thinking I was seeing them hiding in the shadows (even in the house) and when I was on my way to my room, I couldn't take it any longer so I had to stand still in my brother's room and turn on the bathroom light with the door open. I decided to read (2:00am) with lights on or play my Game Boy SP untill 6:00!

When i was little and laying in bed to go to sleep, i could hear my heart beating but i didn't know what it was so i used to imagine a giant T-rex dinosaur was running and destroying the town i lived in and that any moment its foot would come crashing down through the roof, evan though i knew dinosaurs are extinct and it was very unlikely. It was only till i was about 11-12 did i find out it was my heart. I still imagine it sometimes, but im not scared.

When I was young, the monster I was afraid of was Bloody Mary (the one who you could summon by chanting her name three times in front of mirror), but even more terrifying than her was the man I believed to be her husband, the Wolf-Man. He wasn't actually a wolf at all, that was just his name. He was a guy that drove around in a white pick-up truck, armed with a rifle, and would shoot any children that were not in the presence of an adult. This could happen indoors or outdoors, though he never entered a house, so you were only at risk in front of a window if you were inside. The only room that was safe from him was a cedar closet in my house, because it had no windows, but I believed it was haunted and was jsut as scared of it as I was of the Wolf-Man.

A lot of people were scared of the monster under the bed. Myself, I was specifically scared of this monster I read about in a children's book called the Body, which for some reason sounded really plausible to me. The Body was a like a human being, but it had no bones. At night, it would slither along the floor, and if it saw your foot hanging out from under the blankets, it would grab and suck out all your bones through your toes - and you would become the next Body.

My solution was to make sure my blanket was always tucked under my feet when I slept so the Body couldn't get my foot. To this day, I have trouble falling asleep if I don't have a blanket tucked all around my feet.

When I was around 4-12 I beleived there were monsters ion my room at night. We had a sponge paint job on my walls, and i could swear that some of the random sponge designs were evil faces, one i remeber was like a half woman half werewolf. Also, I beleived there were wicked ants and dwarves under my bed. If any body part hung over my bed the dwarf would slice that body part off with an axe and feed it to the ants and they would carry away the body part. Also, I'd beleive if I moved at all in my bed or made a sound whatsoever wolves would pounce up and eat me. And the sound of my own heart in my ear on the pillow made me think that someone...an axe murderer for some reason was coming up the stairs and those were his footsteps... Yeah... I was a frightened kid and screamed alot at night. The only thing that turned it around was when I was 12 I talked to some native american woman and she told me that the wolves I was so afraid of were really there to protect me and guard me as my spirit friends... so another funny beleif, but i was no longer afraid at night after that, though I still don't sleep with any part of my body over the bed...

I used to believe the pictures of me in the photo frames around my house were alive. They featured a girl who looked like me, but wasn't me at all. She would stare at me when my back was turned. To prevent her from staring, I would put the frames face down every time I saw her face.

When I was a child I would never let my leg or foot dangle over the edge of the bed while I slept because I knew that the monster under the bed would grab it. As long as I kept all appendages under the almighty sheet, nothing could get me.

When I was little my sister told me that there was a man that walked up and down our road at night and looked in your window and watched you sleep. She described him as being half alive with no scalp, you could see his brains. She said he carried a candle to walk with on dark nights and had a pet that changed everytime she talked about him (half racoon half snake, half wolf half bat that sort of thing)I was super gullible I guess because I believed in it till I was 10 or 11 then she told some cousin that she made it up. I was so mad. I should have known, that night she came in and said she ran over him,
