When I was a young girl, my mother used to sing "You are my Sunshine" to me as a lullaby. She died when I was 8, and because she had been sick for a few years, I hadn't heard her sing it to me since I was probably around 4 or 5. Well, one summer, I found my old crib mobile music box, which played the song. While I remembered the first verse, I couldn't remember the second. On the long trip to college, I finally asked my dad, "Daddy? How's the second verse of 'You are my Sunshine' go? All I know is that it's about steak." "Steak? There's no steak in that song." That's when I found out that I was mishearing the phrase "When I awoke dear, I was *mistaken*", and had been assuming it was about steak.
My high school friend, Janice, thought that the song "You're the One That I Want" (from "Grease") was actually "Women in a Boat". (If you say it fast enough, maybe.)
In the Cyndi Lauper song "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", I used to think she was saying "they dance the waddle" instead of they just wanna.
top belief!
I thought the line in the song "more than a woman" was "four-legged woman".
When my husband was small he wondered what muching for money was.
As in the Beatles song 'I don't care too much for money - money can't buy me love'!
There's an English line to a Cantopop song (sang by Alan Tam) years ago that I always thought was 'And all night in the loo....' which made me burst out laughing whenever it was on... Until I found out from the lyrics book that it actually was 'And all I ever knew...'
I can't be the only one who thought that Andy Fairweather Low (think it was him!) was singing My Diamond Necklace instead of Wide Eyed and Legless.....
When I first heard the song "What A Wonderful World" in the film "Good Morning Vetnam" (and even later, on the radio), I didn't understand the meaning of the lyrics that went "the bright, blessed day, the dogs say good night," or why talking dogs were part of a wonderful world. It was several years before I finally realized that the correct lyric was actually "the bright, blessed day, the dark, sacred night."
I thought the Jimi Hendrix lyric from Purple Haze was "Excuse me while I kiss this guy". Turns out it's "while I kiss the sky". Hey, I was young!
A woman I knew many years ago thought that the name of the song "Vaya Con Dios" was "Bye Bye Cornelius."
I was in a band in high school. Our drummer was famous for getting lyrics wrong. One time he suggested we do "Tapico's Own". We were all scratching our heads until he explained, "You know, that Sonny & Cher song Tapico's Own." He was talking about "The Beat Goes On". We never let him forget it.
I misheard Modonna's "La Isla Bonita"'s opening line, 'last night I dreampt of San Pedro' for 'last night I dreampt of some bagels'
Easy mistake.
In the clash song, "spanish bombs" whenever they said "spanish bombs" I thought they were saying "spanish bongs" and everytime they said "oh mi corazon" i thought they were saying " oh my go a thong" until i looked up the lyrics on the internet.
Mysterious Ways - U2
My girlfriend confessed she had some difficulty understanding the line "Onionese Boy" (a boy from Onionesia?)
I almost felt sorry telling her the actual line is "On your knees boy". We both had a good laugh.
I used to think Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like A Lady" was really a dance tune called "Do The Calculator".
when I first heard the song "Strange Brew" by Cream I thought they were singing "Strange Prune" - I have no idea why...
Long ago, my sister owned a Beatle's LP. One song in particular on the album that she sung a lot was "Take the back right turn". It wasn't until I looked at the back of the album cover did I discover that the song was entitled "Paperback writer".
I used to beleve that the lyrics to the patriotic song 'Rule Britania..' were 'Raw Britania' and I thought Britania was the word for the little crunchy cubes you get in Branston Pickle.
My son who is now grown up loved to sing along to the Rick Astley song "Fold me in your arms". It was hold not fold!
