When I was in kindergarten, I thought the last line of "America" was "Great God our kid."
I thought the lyrics for Lady Gaga's Poker Face was "Cutie pie, cutie pie" instead of "can't read my, can't read my"
I had a toy called Learn Through Music which had cartridges with pictures that would go into a toy with a touchscreen and buttons. The cartridges would be based on popular children's tv shows. My younger siblings would play with it for years. Now here's the belief!
The demo cartridge had samples of the Spongebob cartridge, one slide had him singing about what over, under, and through mean. Part of the lyrics (to the tune of Johnny Comes Marching Home) were:
"Under means go below below, below. Over means go above above, above."
I thought he was singing "underneath" and "overneath"! I knew that overneath wasn't a real word, I thought it was just part of Spongebob's usual silliness. I only realized my mistake in recent years!
Michael Jackson- Billie Jean.
"Billie Jean's not my love, ah,
She's just a girl and I'm on the run.
The jail is not my son.
She says I'm done.
But the jail is not my son."
I was quite grown up when Irish punk group Stiff Little Finger had a tune (forgot the name) which ends with the singer repeatedly singing “scream whenever you hear this tone”. To me it sounded like “scream banana you’re in his toe”.
"Come On Eileen, I swear I'll eat beets!
At this moment, I'll eat anything!
You want the dress? Eileen, please tell me yes!
You are thirty, Come On Eileen!"
I first heard this song in 2013 and thought it was what he was saying. I still hear these words when I hear this song. :D
A common misheard lyric in BMTH’s ‘Shadow Moses’ is “THIS IS SANDPIT TURTLE!”
when i was 9 i misheard one of the boom boom dollar lyrics more time as moan time (like as having sex)
The Limbo Rock - real lyrics:
"Jack be limbo, Jack be quick
Jack go under limbo stick"
But I thought it was:
"Check your limbo techniquique
Check your under limbo seat"
top belief!
I misheard the "church on time" lyric in David Bowie's "Modern Love" as "ching chong chang" and wondered how such a racist song was allowed to be played on the radio!
When I first heard American Pie, I misheard the chorus as "buy, buy me some 'Merican pie". I didn't know why Don McLean couldn't just buy the pie himself.
I used to believe "I Want Candy" was actually "I'm A Kidney", especially since they played it in PE/health class at my school.
When I was in Grammer school we sang a Polish folk song about how the "Vistula" ( a river in Poland) was flowing. I misunderstood and thought it was "fistula" for years.. Then someone told me a fistula was a boil you get on your rear end. Talk about embarrassed...
I always thought that Beyonce's 'All The Single Ladies' was about drawing circles around the toys you liked in the catalogue. It didn't help that my parents called the action of drawing a circle around an image in a catalogue 'ringing'.
"If you liked it, then you should have put a ring on it"
In 'Call Me Maybe', I misheard 'Ripped jeans skin' as 'Rich cheese skin'.
In Kesha's Tik Tok, I thought she was saying "The party don't start 'till our work ends'.
I used to think the song Wind the Bobbin Up was Wind the Bobbinut and wondered what a bobbinut was meant to be.
For some reason I thought the song Admiral which sounds like Atomic Kittens I Want Your Love had lyrics that went 'at first we sail our karumba, and then set sail into the sea'. I guess I just made it up without realising because I have looked it up and never found those exact lyrics.
In the early 1960s, Peter, Paul & Mary's recording of "Puff the Magic Dragon" was played on the radio a lot. Yes, I am old enough to remember hearing it on the radio in my parents' car. There is a line in which Little Jackie Paper would bring to Puff : ". . . strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff". I did not know what sealing wax was; I only knew what a ceiling was. I knew plenty of people waxed their kitchen floors. But I didn't know anyone who waxed their ceiling. I still haven't met anyone who waxes their ceiling, or seen ceiling wax in any store.
Kasabian In the song
“you’re in love with a psycho”
I thought it said
“Jibber jabber at the bargain booze”
