When I was little and was riding in the car with my Aunt and Uncle it was raining and there was thunder. I asked my Aunt if the thunder was God moving furniture around. I guess I truely thought
God was moving his furniture in his livingroom.
My Aunt and Uncle just laughed and laughed.
I used to believe that lightning came down. Now I know it goes UP.
WHEN IT RAINED AND THUNDERED THEY USES TO TELL US KIDS NOT TO TOUCH OR PRESS OUR NOSES ON THE WINDOW WHEN WE LOOKED OUT TO SEE THE LIGHTENING. IF WE DID THEY TOLD US A BOLT WOULD COME DOWN AND ELECTROCUTE US. YEARS LATER IT HIT ME, THEY DIDN'T WANT FINGERPRINTS!
From an early age, I already knew that lightning was attracted to metal objects. But, I still didn't quite have all the facts straight.
One day, there was a storm outside while I was at home, in the living room, playing Mouse Trap. I was so scared to play the game because I thought that the little steel ball that came with the game was enough metal to bring the lightning crashing through the window and into the house.
One time when I was 6 and my cousin was 5, there was a storm. We were in our grandparents car and were arguing about what lightning was. I thought I was a lightbulb and my cousin thought it was a candle. Lightbulbs would make more sense then a candle, though!!
i was told that there was a special type of lightening that seeped throught the cracks in the window and strangled you, i was terrified everytime there was a storm for years.
For a very long time when I was younger, I was terribly afraid of thunder storms because I thought that thunder was the sound of the barrier between earth and hell being broken and that lightening was the spark of that barrier being broken. I thought I had to sit quietly and pray during thunder storms so that the creatures from hell that escaped through the broken barriers won't come and get me.
I once thought that clouds were solid because of cartoons. I thought thunder was formed by those solid clouds colliding with each other. Lightning was formed by people on the top of clouds starting fires and when another cloud crashes into the cloud that they are on, it produces an explosion that sends lightning to earth.
When I was young my parents told me and my sister that if we would hear a loud thunder...and see the lightning that there was made a picture from above.. so we had to make a big smile or funny face, for a picture. So if there was thunder and lightning me and my sister were staring out off the window...to get on the picture..with very silly smiley faces..haha..
I watched Heidi as a kid and she believed that when there was lightning you could see into heaven...so I was never scared and always looked...still do!
i used to believe that when it started to thunder it was santa moving his toys around
My mom once told me that storms were actually Heaven's worst boy bands that thought they were good enough to play music.
I used to believe that if you looked directly at a lightning bolt you'd go blind. Not really sure why I thought that, but even now when I see a lightning bolt in the sky I automatically look away.
When I was a kid we used to live next to an airforce base in California during the 80's. The 80's being the cold war era, one of my biggest fears was nuclear war... especially with all the made for TV movies on the subject.
Well one night I was awoken by a loud BOOM and a flash of light so bright it seemed like someone turned the all the lights in the house on and off. The booms and flashes continued over and over. Immediately I began to pray in earnest and in a cold sweat.... until I realized it was a thunder storm.
In my defense I had never experienced a thunderstom in my life and it was the worst one on record for that small town.

My mother told us, and I still believe this by the way, that if you make loud noises during a thunder storm, the thunder will get louder and louder. So, when we were little, depending on our mood we'd either be VERY quiet, or be as noisy as possible.

My father used to tell me that lightning was attracted to noise, so I should be quite when there was a storm.
I think he just wanted me to shut up.
My mum told me that flashes was created when two clouds crash into each other. When I found it out the true explanation many years later I was not very happy and felt cheated.

When I was about 5 yrs old my mum told me that thunder was the clouds bashing together.Every time there was a thunderstorm i would try and see which clouds were about to collide.I dont consider myself particularly stupid but i believed this until there had been some very bad storms in England around 1988,and in the newspapers they explained that thunder was the sonic boom caused by lightning.I was 17 years of age,and as i read this i could feel my face going beetroot red,i even looked over my shoulder to see if anyone was laughing.
