When I was little I used to believe in the phone police. Whenever I would make a prank call I would at the end pretend to cry and say "I am sorry, I wont do it again theres no need for the police".
I thought it was against the law to carry around a lot of money unless you were putting it in the bank.
My mother told me that it was against the law to cross busy streets until you were 12. One day I asked the D.A.R.E. officer that was giving a presentation to our 5th grade class if that was true. Needless to say, I was the laughing stock of Ms. Homburge's class for that whole year.
When I was about 6 I thought it was the funniest thing in the world to prank call 411. One day I called them and spoke in a French accent. When the man answered the phone, I asked, in French, if he spoke French, and was (unpleasantly) surprised to hear him say "oui," considering I myself knew no French beyond "Do you speak French?" He proceeded to ask me something in French. Not knowing what to do, I assumed that he was saying, "city and state please," seeing as that was what they usually said when you called 411. I replied, after a long pause, "Uh...Paris, France" and the guy immediately sighed and said, "Alright, for impersonating a Frenchman, that's a fine of $250 dollars..." Terrified, I hung up before he could even finish his sentence, and for at least two years after that, I lived in genuine fear of receiving a massive bill from the 411 people or being hunted down by the FBI. I never prank called 411 again.
When I read the news about crime and saw the word "rap sheet," I thought that "rap sheet" is where you compose songs on it to make rap music.
I used to believe that my pulse from when my head was against a pillow was a police man's feet stomping to come upstairs and get me.I always pictured them looking like ythose rescue heros but life size and with guns and much scarier. i was terrified that one would take me away to kjail and i would stay there forever and ever
I used to believe that undercover cops hid under covers/sheets.
When I was a kid I thought that when a cop drove by you were supposed to call them a pig and oink at them and they didn't mind. One time a cop threatened to give me and my brother each a really big fine and we felt so bad that we didn't tell anyone for years.
When I was younger I would always put my seat belt on way before my mom would start the car. I thought the reason police officers had laptops in their cars was because they had a special software that could track cars with kids who didn't have their seatbelts on!
You know how men and woman in the armed forces wear those Camoflage Uniforms? Well I used to think that they were burglers and I kept having Nightmares that they would come and Kill me and rob me. I used to see them in Shopping Centres and I would really freak out.
i once believed that S.W.A.T.
standed for sit,wait,and,talk.
lol!
When I was little, I thought that policemen had special trackers that could tell if you had your seatbelt on! I always wore it because I was afraid I'd get arrested!
I used to belive, when I was little, that police used to just shoot people. They shouted "Freeze!", then fired.
My mum told me that whenever I saw a police car\Ambulance\Fire Engine with sirens blaring shooting down the road, that they were 'just practising'. I dont think she wanted to expose me to the real world just yet. Thanks mum!
When I was around 6 I asked my mum what FBI stood for. She told me it was the Federal Investigational Bureau. I believed it was FIB for the next four years.
My parents always used to drive really slowly when they passed a police car, and when I asked why they told me it was because police officers would give them tickets if they drove too fast. I thought that anybody who gave my mom or dad a ticket must be evil, but I was confused because in the movies police officers were good. I came to the conclusion that cops in blue uniforms were good, and cops in black uniforms were bad.
When i was little, I saw a sign in a store that said "shoplifters will be prosecuted."
I somehow got it into my little head that if you tried to steal your hands would be chopped off.
I used to think that when someone was read the "Riot Act" that a policeman would pull a little card out of his pocket and read it to the bad person, like a Miranda warning.
In England, the news often reports that "a man is helping police with their enquiries". I used to believe this meant that some lucky individual was given a notepad and pen, and asked to go round interviewing people about murders and so forth, and got to be a pretend policeman for the day!
I used to believe that if you were arrested, you were automatically put in jail. I thought this because many episodes of 1980's cop shows ended with the villain being arrested (if he is not killed), and the conflict of the episode is resolved as soon as the perpetrator is placed under arrest. The concepts of "trials" or "the possibility that the arrested person is innocent" did not occur to me at the time.
