When I was a kid they always had commercials for vacations to Jamaica where all the happy island people were singing and playing guitar. I didn't know there was more than one Jamaica so when we took the train to Jamaica, Queens I was really surprised.
When I was growing up San Francisco was the only city I had ever seen so I thought that all cities had hills. I was sure that in order to be a city it would have to have hills - boy was Los Angeles a surprise for me!

Diana, Princess of Wales was a confusing title to a seven year old girl. Unaware that Wales was part of the UK, I thought she was princess of the big, underwater mammals. I wanted to be Princess of Dolphins. Still do, actually...
I used to believe when i was younger that the world was square so if u got in a boat and just kept going u would fall off the earth.
I remember thinking that Indiana was India, and it was part of the United States. I remember thinking how cool it was to live in the same country as Aladdin (don't ask).
When I was 5 years old, my parents took me to Colonial Williamsburg. I thought that the whole town was some sort of natural phenomena, like the grand canyon and Old Faithful. I thought that in like, the 1600's, the pilgrims, upon discovering this place, must have thought it was some idealistic representation of a faraway future.
I used to believe that the Netherlands was Hell.
When i was little i use to believe that whenever you would put ur finger on a map that people could actually see ur finger going by their window... So i would always slide my finger across Pennsylvania to see if i could see my finger go by...

Once when I was vacationing with my parents in England, they suggested we go to see Greenwich Mean Time. I protested tremendously because I didn't want to go to a place where people were mean to each other. Instead I requested we go to Greenwich Nice Time. Naturally, we stayed entirely away from Greenwich.

I used to think Canberra was in Queensland, somewhere near where Mt Isa is. I don't know why I thought this, to this day I can't for the life of me remember what made me think this, I grew up in Hobart (enough said, lol)...it wasn't until I was back to Sydney in Year 7 that I found out where Canberra really is.
i used to believe that the other half of the world was an exact mirror image of this half, and that everyone had someone else that looked exactly like them on the other side. I always thought it was a race with your own look-a-like to finish whatever it is you do in life first. If i was reading a book, i would always wonder if my look-a-like on the other side of the world was up to the same page I was. I would imagine i was always winning with her having to run to catch up. I called it the Game of Life and even wrote stories about it.
When I was about 7 years old I heard the news mention New Mexico. I thought for a long time that it was a "new" part of Mexico that had just been established.
