I remember being a very little girl...5 or 6...sitting in the backseat with my brother and sister...My great grandmother, perhaps sensing that we might be afraid of the dark told us that whenever we went through tunnels, we should close our eyes and make a wish. If we finished before exiting the tunnel, our wish would come true. That was over 30 years ago, but I still make a wish when I drive through them.

I used to love Knight Rider when I was a kid. My Dad used to tell me and my brothers that he had Turbo Boost. When we were in the car he flicked a switch and put his foot down. I thought he had the fastest car in town.

It was a Maxi.

My Dad also told me about the 9 O'clock horses.

To prevent me from sitting in the passenger seat of my Mums car and annoying her on long journeys she used to say that if I didn't sit in the back seat, the car would be unbalanced. This worked for some time before I finally realised that whenever dropping my less troublesome sister off at school she was allowed in the front seat.

I overheard my parents speaking about the Third Party one day - and was furious that they'd managed to sneak the first and second party past me - having a good time behind my back! They then explained that they were talking about third party insurance for the car!

As well as the old exhaust pushing the car thing, I used to believe that front wheel drive meant the front wheels turned, rear wheel drive the rear wheels would turn and four wheel drive meant all four wheels would turn. Valuable years of my life were wasted, that I shall never get back, trying to figure out how this worked.

I used to believe that cars were pushed along by the exhaust... And that the engine sucked air in to go in reverse... Then, the more exhaust pipes a car had the faster it went. This thought true cause on the tail pipes that pointed towards the ground, when it was cold, it looked like it pushed the car!

I USED TO BELIVE THAT THERE WERE LITTLE PEOPLE INSIDE OUR CAR'S STEREO, AND WOULD WONDER HOW THEY SHRUNK TO FIT IN THERE.

I used to believe that it was the air coming out of a car exhaust (tail pipe) that pushed the car allong...so the faster the car, the more exhausts it had....which is sort of true, so didn't help the matter

Because of my name, Aaron, I once thought Air Conditioning was actually "Aaron-ditioning" and was for my pleasure only and to make other people cool you had to buy "Joe-ditioning" or "Sarah-ditioning" or whatever their name might be.
Yeah, I ate a lot of paint chips.

You know the big power boxes on the side of the road (in New Zealand). When I was younger i used to believe that a little man lived in there, and he used to flick all the switches to turn on all the lights! :)

when i was an anklebiter, i used to ask everyone where all the trees were driving to.

Becuase we were travelling in our car and the trees would pass us as we drove .. i always thought they were driving the other direction!!

When I was younger and we used to travel with the windows down I thought the sounds the tires make on the ground was because the tires were new. I also thought that if you ran over the reflectors that were sometimes embedded in the ground on highways you would cut you tires.

My dad told me the hazard light button was actually for the ejection seat. And we didn't know which one it ejected. Thanks Dad.

My friend (whose last name is "Long")used to believe that all trucks on the roads belonged to her Dad. Whenever they saw one with the sign "Long vehicle" on the back, her Dad would say "Look, another one of my lorries"

My daughter was not quite three when I had a car accident. Apparently the one thing that stuck in her mind was that I hadn't been *(uncharacteristically mind you) been wearing my seat belt. She became convinced that if you didn't wear a seat belt you'd crash!

My evil babysitter Patti left me in her car (a green Vega, of course) so she could go shopping. Before she left, she told me not to touch what I later learned to be an emergency brake, because if I did, the car would blow up. It seemed perfectly logical that there would be a lever to pull to make a car blow up, since I had seen so many cars blow up on TV. To this day, I can't use the emergency brake without feeling a twinge of trepidation.

Sloppy Science Category: When I was quite young (It probably lasted until I was 6!), I noticed that if I leaned on the bumper of a car, the whole vehicle would bounce up & down. Conclusion: I was stronger than a car. I actually believed that, if faced with a car bearing down on me, I could simply reach out with my hand and stop it. No superhuman strength --- it just seemed logical, given that I could make a supposedly heavy car bounce. Thank God I never tested my theory! Fortunately, Mom & Dad watched a TV series called "UFO" that contained an episode in which a child is struck & killed by a car. LOTS of blood, too. I found it to be a sobering revelation.

I was abouot 6 when I asked my mother if the car ran out of gas right when we got to the gas station. She must not have heard me because she said Yes. I believed this until I was about 10 when I mentioned it to my friends. They laughed so hard and teased me about it for years!

My parents and I often went on little road trips when I was younger and I didn't fully understand how cars worked. For some odd reason I believed that the roads were like giant conveyor belts and the cars just sat on them. The cars that passed us were just on faster belts. I have no clue why I thought that...
