Before my sister-in-law got her license, she was taking a trip with her parents. Her father said that he was getting tired and my sister-in-law told him to put the car on cruise control and lay back and take a nap! She thought that the car would control itself and take you where you need to go!
I used to think that Ford Anglia cars were made by Heinz. This was because the oddly sloping rear window, when seen from the side, closely resembled the shape of the panel on a Heinz label.
To this day, if I see a Ford Anglia or a picture of one, I say "that's a Heinz Baked Beans car."
For some reason, I was not able to grasp the idea of speed. I thought that if everybody was going the same speed on the road, then they would all catch up to eachother and would eventually be driving in a straight line next to eachother. I didn't understand that as long as people started at different points, they could go the same speed without hitting eachother.
i used to believe that if you missed an exit when you were going on the freeway, that you would have to keep on going until the end of the freeway to turn around and come back.
From the time I was about 2-5, I didn't realize there were 2 lanes on the streets. Whenever we got in the car, since of course I was short and could only see through the windsheild, I was always scared that we would run head-on into another car. I finally had the bright idea to ask "How come we never hit any of the other cars?" and when I got the answer.. wow. Adults are smart!!
When I was little I used to think that cruise control meant that you didn't have to steer or push the gas. The car just drove on it's own!!
When I was a kid I thought that the handbrake would stop the car dead in it's tracks no matter what, and whenever I saw a car skid into something on TV I'd say "He shoulda used the emergency brake..."
I thought small cars grew up to become big cars
everytime i went to Toys R Us i used to get worried because there was one of those height bars on the car park and i used to think, omg what happens when our car grows and we cant get in!
I remember I was very little and we were driving in to a ferry with our car. The boat opened and it had big teeth! I was so scared and cried, I didn't want to be eaten by the boat.
This is actually my college roommates belief.
You know how wheels on cars sometimes look like they are going backwards when the car is going fast? Well, her father told her that they really were going backwards, because everyone knows that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Well, when she was 16, she was out with friends, and someone mentioned how funny it was that wheels look like they go backwards, and she proceeded to enlighten them with her father's explanation, that she had believed for all those years. :o)
Street signs with the upward pointing arrow was for airplanes.
I used to believe that if you slept while on a long car ride, that the trip would be made shorter by the Fairies that only appeared to the driver. The Fairies would pick up the car and move it to our destination.
My sister used to think that the road outside our mom's office window had a car factory on each end, just out of view. All the cars on the road were made in one of the factories, only to be driven past the window to the other one, which took them apart. She knew the factories were specially placed so you couldn't see them but she'd still make herself crazy trying.
I used to believe that when adults mentioned horsepower that there were Horses under the bonnet
When I was like 3, I went to see Barney Live in Rockefeller Center. My mom told me we were gonna go through the tunnels. I imagined us crawling through a like pitch black touch tunnel. I fell asleep on the ride, so I was mad until I was like 10 because I thought I missed the fun!
when my sister and i were little my dad had this old el camino. he laways told us that he had the only 'magic' car in the world because he was able to take the key out while the car was on. for the longest time we thought that he was the greatest magician in the world.
When I was a child, whenever we went on the highway my dad would tell us to roll up the windows (to prevent the loud sound from the wind rushing by). Because he always said this, without fail, I developed the idea that having your windows rolled down on the highway was illegal.
I used to believe that when you crossed over a bridge, you had to actually drive over the top of it. So your car would have to reach the top points & I thought we would fall into the water. The first time I remember going over a bridge was the Mississippi River & I was scared to death that we would fall off the tip of one of the points. When we got closer I realized that there was a road you drove on under the supports.
I used to believe that I could see over the clouds if I looked thru the tinted part on a cars windshield. I believed that I could see God and the Angels looking down at us. I would always ask my mom if she wanted me to check up on my great grandma!
