I thought that some government official was monitoring your air conditioning usage in the car and would bill you for it every time you turned it on because my mom said that if you push the "A/C" button, it would cost you more money.

When I was about 4 or 5, I used to believe that the lighted arrows on the dash that came on when you turned on your turn signal let you know if your car was working okay. I thought that there were both red and green arrows and that if they came on green, it was okay to turn, if they came on red, the car would break down. My mom swears that her car only has green arrows, but I clearly remember a time when our car broke down when turning into a parking lot, and shortly before that I saw that the turn signal arrow was red.

When I was little, my dad would always bring home random gifts that "fell off the truck." For years, I thought that trucks had these faulty doors that, at any moment, could pop open and spill its contents.

i'm not sure what category this would go in, but i always thought that rear view mirrors in cars had to be positioned very exactly and that it was really hard to adjust a rear view mirror just right. as a little kid i would always freak out if i accidentally bumped or moved it out of position.

when my younger cousin was about 5, my dad and I made him believe that our minivan was actually a space shuttle and we could make it blast off into space, only the wings were broken and we couldn't get them fixed. he actually believed this for quite a long time.

In maryland the tags had three letters and three numbers. The three letters on the tag for my moms car almost matched her initials. So I thought that the letters on everyone's tags were actually their initials and that they had just made a mistake and sent my mom the wrong tag. One day on the beltway I saw a tag with the *same number* and my *mother's correct initials*! I begged my mom to stop them so we could trade the tags back!!!

One day when I was in the car with my aunt she rolled down the car windows and told me not to stick my arm out the window, or it would be cut off. So, I beleived that there were mean people sitting in front of their windows watching for little kids to stick their arms out the window and when they saw one, they would run out to the street with a huge knife and cut the kid's arm off.

I used to believe that cars, trucks, and vans were actually dinosaurs and the groaning of the engine was them roaring when they were upset. I was freaked out by the huge tanker trucks for this reason!

The first time I heard the term Cruise Control I thought it meant that if you pushed that button in the car you'd go straight to the harbor to get on a boat.

I had a young friend whose father would press what looked like a button on the dash of his car, telling her it was turbo boost, and then put his foot down a little harder on the accelerator so the car would 'take off'. She was utterly convinced that the car was going faster because the turbo boost had been switched on!

I did not understand that the reflectors on the road were reflecting our own light from the headlights back at us. I thought that there were tunnels under the road and that there were people shining flashlights from little holes underneath.

I used to believe that you had to pay for gasoline with a credit card only. I didn't think that you could pay cash for gas at the gas station.

I used to believe the lane marker bumps on the road and on the shoulder were a type of braille so blind people could drive.

I used to believe that cars were just like people, in the fact that the front of the car looked just like a person, with the eyes being the lights and the grill being its mouth. Each car seemed to have a different look to it, so I thought that each person in the world had a car that looked just like their face or personality.

When I was little my dad bought a new car. The first car I'd ever seen with cruise control. Dad was bragging about this wonderful feature. So I asked him - just what is cruise control. He explained that it made the car go by itself. I thought about that for a while then asked him - How does it know when to turn? I was so afraid that his new car was going to drive it's self off during the night that for several days I locked the garage door so it couldn't get out.

my brother would insist for years and years that it's illegal for one car to overtake another. even with the entire family assuring him that it wasn't so he would still tell dad off for overtaking other drivers on the motorway!

When I was younger I used to think that cars were being driven by giant children like toy cars but you couldn't see their hands because they were invisible. I don't know why I thought this though because I also thought that other people could see the giants except for my family.
