When I was little, I used to think that if you were listening to a song on the radio in the car, that it would pick up where it left off when you got back in.
You know the big power boxes on the side of the road (in New Zealand). When I was younger i used to believe that a little man lived in there, and he used to flick all the switches to turn on all the lights! :)
When I was really little I was told by my Dad that when we were driving under a bridge I had to duck my head, or else it would hit me. I believed him for years and years...
I believed that vehicles were propelled by the exhaust pipe that was coming straight out the back. However, I could not figure out how the vehicle was propelled by the ones that came out to the side of the car. Around ages 4 to 6.
I use to think because i couldn't see my dad's feet from the backseat and just saw him steering i thought that the road moved and he just steered.
For as long as I can remember, my parents have referred to the handle above your car door (on the inside) as the "Chickenhandle". I have believed that it was the proper term for this particular device for years upon years. I remember, at one point in time (about two or three years ago), asking my Dad if it was really called the Chickenhandle, to which he of course answered, "yes".
Let's make a long story short: I am fourteen now, and found out about five days ago that my parents really don't have any idea what the Chickenhandle is really called.
When my brother and I were little and my dad used to pick us up to go to the city he would yell, "Idiot!" at all the people that passed us on the highway just because he thought we thought it was funny. One day I asked, "Dad, why do all the idiots drive in front of you?"
we used to use automatic car washes all the time, and the window i sat next to in the car had a leak(like, 3 drops would get in). i convinced myself that if the window had a leak the car would fill up and i'd drown. i wigged out so bad that every time we'd use the car wash, i'd get out and wait for them to come through!
Once in the car with my Mom I asked my Mom why they called it rush hour if everyone was moving so slowly.
On our long trips from Michigan to Massachusetts to see relatives, I would try to sleep for as long as I could because I believed time changed and went incredibly fast when you were asleep. I wondered what happened to the other people in the car when this happened.
When I was little I used to think that the dome light in the car was really called the dumb light.
I used to believe that using the radio in your car used up your gas
I overheard my parents speaking about the Third Party one day - and was furious that they'd managed to sneak the first and second party past me - having a good time behind my back! They then explained that they were talking about third party insurance for the car!
When I was young I did not understand on the car mirror how it said "Object's in mirror are closer than they appear"....somehow I thought, "If something appears in the mirror, how can it be closer than it appears?"
when i was 8 or 9, whenever my dad said that we were going to drive on the harbour bridge, i thought that we were actaully going to drive over the top of the brigde and not the road, so i was scared
I used to think that if I leaned on the car door on the side that we were turning, my weight would make the car roll over.
When I was younger I used to wonder how the gas tanks at the gas station could hold so much gas and so many different kinds because they were so small.
When I was younger I knew that the earth spun. Well, I assumed then that when you were driving, the car wasn't really moving, the earth was spinning and the wheels moved to let the earth spin while the car stayed still!
When I was younger I always believed that somehow our family car knew where we were going and had its own brain and it was a person disguised as a man. I was deathly scared of the "car man". I thought the car always knew where we were going because of the turn signals, i never knew until i was 10 that my parents would flip the turning signal on. Once i realized that i was less afraid of the family car and the "car man". I still today get carefully in the car because part of me still believes that their really is such thing as a "car man"
I used to think that if I took my eyes from the road for just one moment while my parents were driving, we'd immediately get in an accident. Even late at night, I'd strain to stay awake, peering from the backseat at the road, completely convinced it was my gaze keeping the car in the lane and all other cars away.
I was a very paranoid child.
