When I was a child I thought that stop lights had little devils inside of them that changed the signals from green to yellow to red and back.
The little devil used levers to change the lights. He looked like the little devil on the Underwood Deviled Ham labels.
I used to believe (because my mom told me this) that there were little men that lived inside the traffic lights that operated them. She told me that was why the lights worked all the time, and if we saw a broken traffic light, she would say, "poor little man's gonna get fired for that". I believed this far longer than I should have.
I used to believe that at the traffic lights there were little people inside the lights switching them to keep traffic moving slowly... Boy was I wrong....
When I was little, I used to believe that there were actually people (actually monkeys) inside the traffic lights changing from green, to yellow, to red. I think I got the idea from old Flintstone shows.
I used to think there were little people inside traffic lights who could see when a car was coming and it would make the light turn red, otherwise it would always be green.
I used to believe that there was a tiny police man or woman inside of stoplights. They would tell the stoplight to change color's!
i used to think that traffic lights were controlled my little smurf kind people who used to live inside there. and if the light was really long it was because they forgot. they would shine there flashlights over colored see-through paper colored red green and yellow.
I used to think that Mice controlled the Stop lights and crosswalk signs.
When I was little my dad told me that a little Leprechaun lived in the electrical box at the corner of every single stop light in the world. If they didn't like you or the car you were driving then the Leprechaun wouldn't change the light for you and he would make you sit there for a long time. So forever everytime i was in the car at the stop light I would pray that the Leprechaun liked me so we didn't have to sit there forever.
I used to beleive that little drawf men were inside each traffic light, making them change colors.
I used to believe that dwarfs lived in traffic lights and pushed pedals to turn on/off the red, green, and yellow.
I use to believe that little elf-like people worked inside traffic lights and changed the colors back and forth for our safety.

When I was three; I firmly believed that elves lived inside the red lights, and that they had some sort of messaging system that told them to hold up a red/green/yellow ball up to the hold. It was a greatly amusing thing to think about at the age of three.
