I used to believe tiny people worked underground at stop lights, watching for cars coming and going. They were in charge of making the lights change color, watching through parascope like binoculars.

I used to think that there were little men that sat on the top of the telephone poles near intersections and watched traffic. they flipped switches that controled traffic lights.

I used to think traffic lights had sensors in them that could tell if enough people were in the left turning lane, for example, or wanting to go straight, and would turn green to lessen the congestion.

When I was about 6 I believed that traffic lights were controlled by men who worked underground in a darkened room with stone walls and floors. The men would make the lights change by pulling on the appropriate string, which dangled from the ceiling.

I used to believe there was like an arcade game in a pole for trafic lights, and someone was playing the game and that made the lights change.

When I was a little kid (like 3 or 4) I thought the green arrow pointing forward on a stoplight meant for the car to flyup into the sky.

I used to believe that there was someone in charge of stoplights in a city. When enough cars would accumulate at a red light, they would push a button and the light would turn green.

When I was 5 or so, I always thought that the light singals would go in any order. I never knew why my mom would slow at a yellow light. I thought if it was yellow the light was trying to make up its mind to turn green or red.

My friend used to believe that the lights that tell you when to cross the road were real people that were just really little and were employed to paint themselves red or green, dependng on whether they were "safe to cross" or "don't cross" and then appear when they were needed.

When I was young, there was a traffic light at an interection near my house that went out ever now and then. I used to think that some guy drove around in his car and threw something out the window that magicly made the traffic lights go out.

I used to believe that traffic lights were controlled by men in chairs somewhere and whenever the light took a really long time to turn green they had fallen asleep or went out to get coffee, and once I tried to get out of the car to wake them up to turn the light green. My mom almost went crazy when I did that!

When I was about six years old, I used to go shopping with my grandfather. When we were standing in front of a traffic light, he could always tell me when it would turn green, but when I tried, I wasn't even close. I thought he had special powers. Now I know he just looked if the cars on the road had already stopped, because our light would turn green then.

I used to think that traffic lights could see cars because how would they know when to let the other cars go through?

As a child, I could never figure out how the traffic signals knew when to change from green to yellow to red and back to green. After much puzzling over this mystery, I decided that there must be a person in the sewers at each intersection who would flip a switch whenever it was time for the light to change. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want such a job!

I used to believe that the traffic lights were controlled by gnomes in air balloons, and that if you asked the gnomes to change the color of the light they would. I thought there was someone inside the refridgerator turning the light on and off and I thought soap operas were reality TV.

Stop lights had sensors that knew when cars were coming or not~that's how they turned red/yellow/green.
